We are in our fourth blog for the month of January and brining the topic of the month (slavery and human trafficking) to an end. In this blog we are dissecting the #MeToo movment and all the problematic people behind it. Most people don't know that Me Too was founded by Tarana Burke back in 2006. She was working with young Black girls at the time; one confided in her that she had been sexually abused by her mother's boyfriend. Tarana at the time didn't know how to comfort the girl because she too had been sexually abused at a child but hadn't worked through the trauma. From then on Tarana's purpose has been to educate and advocate for Black girls with the Me Too Movement.
Because of Hollywood and its selective interest on sensationalized topics we have come to believe Me Too was started by Rose McGowan and Alyssa Milano. Rose McGowan and Alyssa Milano are two former Hollywood A-list actresses. They were in multiple films and television shows and are known for their feminist beliefs. late-2016 Rose McGowan decided to vocally speak up about the sexual predatory nature of Hollywood exects. At first she didn't drop names but she let it be known that she was writing a book about her experiences and that Hollywood bigwigs aren't choosing actresses based on talent but sexual favors. Alyssa Milano decided to back up Rose McGowan and confirmed the sexual predators in the media. Rose found out about Tarana's Me Too movement and started using it as a hashtag give her account more validatity as well as Alyssa. Rose gained more attraction and finally named dropped Harvey Weinsten. TMZ and other sources leaked out an old blackmail tactic that Rose tried on Harvey. Essentially, Rose tried to leverage her sexual assault by Harvey for 6 million dollars to keep silence. Harvey counter offered 1 million dollars. Rose didn't accept the offer and went to the media. By then many other attresses came out to vent their stories of how slimey and grotesque Harvey was towards them; demanding sexual favors for their careers to catapult. Some of these actresses were Angelina Jolie, Urma Thurman, Minka Kelly and Lupita Nyong'o.

Soon after the lid burst the flow of women who claimed to be sexually assaulted or raped in Hollywood gushed out. Some said they had to do sexual favors for roles, some said sex was forced on them, some said they willingly had sex for roles and the agreeements didn't go through after having sex etc. It seemed like everyone had a story and all fingers pointed to the men. From Harvey to Ben Afflict to Nelly (the rapper) to Aziz Ansari (the comedian) to Russell Simmons etc. For awhile every man in the entermainment business looked like Stranger Danger. Everyday women who were not connected to an entertainer that had experienced sexual violenece were overlooked. The claims from some of these women became sketchier and sketchier leaving the boundaries of victim/survivor to possible opportunists. From Azizi's accuser calling a bad date of sexual aggression sexual assault to Nelly's accusor having next day groupie sex regret and some of these accusor's wanting to remain in secrecy but aiming to receive a court payout. #MeToo officially morphed into being trendy as the next come up and as the old saying goes, "Sex sells." No one said the sex had to be consensual to sell.
We the outsiders are watching this #MeToo movement unfold rapidly like an episode of our favorite soap opera. Who will be accused next? Who will be exposed next? Who will have the best story next? Even media personalities like Wendy Williams have vouched their gripes with the #MeToo movement. Actress and news anchor Stacey Dash wrote her thoughts about Hollywood's scandal and comparing it to the the cool kids in high school. Stacy didn't hold her tongue writing how EVERYONE KNEW, just we the outsiders didn't know and when she wrote EVERYONE KNEW that includes the actresses who willingly had sex with producers and execs for roles and now are disgruntle because their careers haven't taken off or got blackballed. Super Head aka Karrine Steffans wrote on her Instagram how this #MeToo movement have been hijacked and turned into a venting circle to destroy men's reputation off of a bad date or personal angst. These women were not victims/survivors of sexual assault but looking for revenge/attention.

Karrine Steffans's take on the #MeToo Movement
Times Magazine mentioned the #MeToo movement but purposely left out Tarana Burke but made sure to include Rose McGowan and Taylor Swift on the cover. When Black Twitter got a hold of the cover they dragged Times Magazine through the dirt for excluding Tarana Burke that they covered a story on Tarana. Tarana Burke the founder of Me Too was left as an after thought when she had the purest intentions of bringing sexual assault to the forefront of conversations.
The last Golden Globe awards Tarana Burke was invited. The theme was black to support survivors of sexual assault all attendees were encouraged to wear black. The hashtag #TimesUp trended all over Twitter in collusion with the Golden Gobe statement. Attendees were actresses, producers and directors media figures smiling as if everything was okay but it wasn't. Oprah gave a heartwarming speech in regards to sexual assault and empowerment for survivors; the next day Seal retweeted a picture of Oprah with Harvey Weinstein with the caption “When you have been part of the problem for decades, but suddenly they all think you are the solution." Of course Seal received incredible backlash for going at Queen Oprah but other users pointed out that Heidi Klum worked with Harvey for years on the show Project Runway. His goal was to gain access to young wannabe designers. Woody Allen who had raped (his then underage stepdaughter) and is currently dating is step daughter is beloved by Hollywood. James Franco was in the building sashaying with his baggaging of forcing underage girls to commit oral sex. Seth MacFarlane (creator of Family Guy) hosted the Oscars in 2013 and stated, "Congratulations, you five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to Harvey Weinstein." So to say Hollywood is shocked by these allegations is obviously a LIE!
Now that you've read the backstory on the #MeToo Movement we will get into why it's problematic. #MeToo is problematic because Hollywood actresses disrupted the energy of Me Too into a self-serving exposing tool. Rose McGowan was offered a reality show and speaking engagements after revealing Harvey Weinsten as a rapist. For her to even expose Harvey it took Harvey to decline her extorting him for 6 million dollars. Rose was NEVER genuine from the beginning she just wanted money/attention. The origins of Me Too for the average everday Black girl who survived sexual trauma founded by Tarana Burke turned into Hollywood blackmail tactic.
After all this finger pointing and loud winded big mouths Harvey Weisten isn't behind jail nor are the other sexual predators in Hollywood. Nor are we asking the everyday non-famous non-celebrity non-rich survivor of sexual violence what they need and how to keep potential victims of sexual violence safe. Sexual violence is being used as a tool to prosper like a pimp in the suburbs. People are so capitalistic or desprate or nefarious that they are leveraging their supposed sexual attacks for money and fame. Hardly any of these people are clean. This is what makes #MeToo problematic. Sexual violence is traumatic and taboo for the average woman. The average woman will not get cameras in her face for being raped. Almost no one will want to hear her story (in some cases not even herself), no one is beating the doors of survivors of molestation to offer book deals, the phone lines for human trafficking survivors to be on reality shows are dry. NO ONE C A R E S about the average survivor of sexual violenece. We suffer is fear, shame and guilt frequently by ourselves.
These actresses are turning sexual assault into a circus freak show and causing the already distrust of REAL victims of sexual assault to grow tremendously. I have actually heard people say these actresses and their false narratives are the reasons why no one believes REAL victims of sexual assault. As RAINN states, "60% of women will experience a full rape or attempted rape by the age of 18." This means we as women have or know someone who has experienced sexual violenece. But we can't speak our truth or are told to keep our truth quiet. If we have the courage to speak our truth it's usually years later and we do it because we're tired of carrying the baggage of trauma alone. We want to air out the hurt so someone knows besides us. We break the decadent veil. We paint the truth, our truth. But this isn't what these actresses are doing. They are looking for a come up on their stories whether real or fake whether consensual or not. They are literally turning a world problem into a moment in time for a cash grab like some type bubble. But when there is no more stories to tell to out some exec will we care about rape anymore? Will we work tirelessly to end rape around the world? Will the beneficiaries of outing these execs donate to resources to help victims? Doubt it. Because once the cameras stop rolling, the mics stop recording, the next trendy topic pushes #MeToo out of our conversations then what? Molestation isn't a Furby, Yo-yo, Easy-Bake Oven or whatever hot toy of the moment. Molestation is long lasting and impactful on the mind, body and soul; so for these wannabes, never-was and has-beens to use sexual violence for a come up is sickening. It makes them no different than their alleged attackers. It's a scam and confirms that Hollywood folks are fake self-centered, money-hungry agents.
