Paint Your Truth is an event Author Vie Ciné is throwing for sexual assault/trauma survivors who live in the Boston or surrounding areas. The purpose for Paint Your Truth is to get the healing process started for those who want to gain the power to continue life as a survivor and not the false label victim. According to RAINN.org 1 in 6 women have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. That means 14.8% were successful, and 2.8% were incomplete rapes.
Let me run you down some more stats from RAINN:
As of 1998, an estimated 17.7 million American women had been victims of attempted or completed rape.
82% of all juvenile victims are female. 90% of adult rape victims are female.
Females ages 16-19 are 4 times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.
Women ages 18-24 who are college students are 3 times more likely than women in general to experience sexual violence. Females of the same age who are not enrolled in college are 4 times more likely.
Don't think rape only affects women because men have some shocking stats as well.
Males in college between the ages of 18-24 are approximately 4 times more likely than non-college male students in that age demographic to be raped or sexually assaulted.
As of 1998, 2.78 million men in the U.S. had been victims of attempted or completed rape.
About 3% of American men—or 1 in 33—have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.
1 out of every 10 rape victims are male.
With statistics this high, why isn't the national media spotlighting this topic? I'll tell you why because it's personal! You see, class, race, education, gender, religion, etc. all separate us into different groups, but sexual assault doesn't have a face that we can say it's THEM and not US. Us can be mother, father, brother, sister, cousin, aunt, uncle, friend, pastor, coach, etc. The horrible thing about a predator is s/he doesn't come out and say, 'I'm a predator looking to ruin your child's life.' It comes with a smile and trust. Trust parents bestow on them unknowingly as to their intentions. As RAINN quoted:
The majority of children and teen victims know the perpetrator.
Of sexual abuse cases reported to law enforcement, 93% of juvenile victims knew the perpetrator.
59% were acquaintances
34% were family members
7% were strangers to the victim
Now armed with this information what are we going to do to promote awareness, prevention, and healing because a scandal or two from institutions like former coach Jerry Sandusky at Penn State and the Catholic Church priest getting exposed isn't enough to put a stop to sexual assault. We need to keep this conversation alive. I'm doing my part for survivors in this upcoming event Paint Your Truth, and I hope you can support victims by donating to the cause.
