Yesterday August 8th, 2016 I was interviewed by the lovely, blessed, and warm spirited Tayla Andre on Big City 101.3 FM Boston. We jumped right into the topic of childhood sexual abuse by announcing the release of MEMOIRS OF A FORGOTTEN CHILD ebook available on Amazon Kindle NOW on Facebook live. I'm not going to lie to you; it was a lot to take in because acknowledging your truth to yourself is one thing. Processing your trauma is another. BUT to speak your truth on a radio show is a whole other level of courage.
Tayla Andre and I tackled this heavy topic by dissecting it into small digestible pieces for the audience because some people honestly don't understand how sexual trauma affects people, specifically a child and how culturally taboo sex is. I know for Haitians but Black people in general, we keep topics like molestation to the family dynamic or to the church, but if the abuse is happening in the home i.e. a cousin molesting another cousin will the issue get resolved or swept under the rug? Most likely out of fear the family will turn a blind eye. For the victim, it shows that their truth doesn't matter. That safety within the world doesn't exist, and thus they're on their own to deal with the trauma by keeping silent. Slowly they build up a wall of fear, shame, and guilt. Tayla and I also discussed the healing process and available stats on RAINN.org. RAINN.org is an organization that collects statistics based on sexual trauma. The provide a hotline, therapy resources, legal advocacy locations, hospitals for a rape kit, etc. They go above and beyond to educate the public on sexual trauma from incest to prison, age to location, race to gender, education to social status.
